In 1935, Paul Sperry, an avid sailor and part-time inventor created the world’s first boat shoe. Using a penknife he carved an intricate pattern in a rubber outsole to give his shoes amazing traction on wet boat decks. This pattern is now known as wave-siping and is the common DNA in all Sperry Top-Sider footwear. For over seventy-five years Sperry Top-Sider has been an icon of style and the American Original. Go behind the scenes and watch this incredible short-film (above) that turns the spotlight on the brilliance behind Sperry’s Top-Sider.
